Our First Project
Birmingham Women: Past & Present Revisited
A 21st century update of the sponsored walk ‘Birmingham Women: Past & Present’ produced by the Feminist Review journal in the 1980s.
The focus of our heritage trails, like that of the original walk, is the untold stories of women’s involvement in a number of areas in city life: political activism, civic life, education, health and welfare, the arts, and science. We will likewise identify new information about the contribution of women towards Birmingham’s history, from the 18th century to the present day.
When Feminist Review first appeared in 1979, it described itself as a socialist and feminist journal, ‘a vehicle to unite research and theory with political practice, and contribute to the development of both’. Challenges of race, class and sexuality have been central to the development of the journal. While the journal is based in London, the desire of the editors was to develop ways and means of involvement for women outside the capital. This was the first time they had developed a walk and we see our project as being an extension of that with the original aims at the heart.
